Sweet Cream Pie in a Jar Recycling Ideas

Posted by

So we used to have a recycling program at the bakery that if you bring back your Pie Jar you could return it for a free cookie. We started this program to promote recycling, and it definitely worked. We had customers in here daily bringing back bags of jars. We also had customers leaving bags of jars outside our doors after we'd closed for the day. We loved seeing all this recycling! But, removing all the labels from the jars, washing and sanitizing the jars took up way more time than we could have imagined with the amount of jars we were receiving back. So, we sadly had to stop our recycling program because dealing with the jars was taking up all my employee's time. They didn't have time to bake, stock or do any other bakery related work! So, we've thought up some ideas for how you can reuse and recycle your pie jar at home! Here's over a dozen different ways to reuse your pie jar. We'd love to see other ways, post photos on social media, tag us and hashtag #postpie so we can see what comes after the pie for you!

1. Use Jars for Fruit Storage

2. Herb Garden

Use jars to create an herb garden in your kitchen! These jars work great for growing any herbs such as basil, mint or even green onions! Make sure they get enough natural light and you'll have fresh herbs all the time.

3. Trail Mix in a Jar

Make our Happy Hippie Trail Mix and store in a jar!

  • 25 g. organic dried blueberries
  • 55 g. all natural Sun Drops
  • 30 g. organic roasted & salted peanuts
  • 30 g. organic pecans

Mix in a bowl, add to jar.

4. Make Oatmeal in Jars

Find the recipe for this Oatmeal here.

5. Candles

If you have loose candles, place them in the jars so they don't drip wax everywhere. They make the perfect centerpiece look even brighter!

6. Cupcake to Go

Use the jars to store already made cupcakes in. This is perfect for taking one cupcake to work or on the road. If you remove the cupcake wrapper before putting into the jar, you can easily eat with a fork and don't have to remove the cupcake from the jar!

7. Caramel Sauce & Chocolate Ganache Storage

If you're baking at home, you probably have a stash of Caramel Sauce or Chocolate Ganache on hand at all times (like us). These jars are perfect for storing each of these in. Find the recipe for our Caramel Sauce here, and find the recipe for our Chocolate Ganache here.

8. Bathroom Necessities

Store things like Q-Tips, cotton balls, mascara or eye liner in the jars.

9. Make Your Own Nut Butter!

These jars are perfect for storing nut butter! Make your own and then store it in the glass jar. Click here for the recipe for one of our favorites, Chocolate Peanut Butter. And, click here for the recipe to our Espresso Vanilla Bean Almond Butter.

10. Salad Dressing, Marinades and Sauces

Jars are also perfect for storing salad dressing, marinades and sauces. Do you make your own at home? I do all the time, and I even make my own sub sandwich dressing. Here's a quick and easy recipe for jazzing up your sandwich. And remember to store it in the jar!

Italian Sub Dressing

  • ½ cup organic canola oil
  • 2 T. organic fresh lemon juice
  • 2 clove organic garlic
  • 1 tsp. organic Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tsp. organic basil
  • 1 tsp. organic sage
  • ½ tsp. organic thyme
  • ½ tsp. organic oregano
  • ¼ tsp. sea salt
  • ¼ tsp. organic black pepper

Add all ingredients to a jar, put the lid on, shake until completely combined.

11. Hummus & Veggie Snack Storage

Going to work and adventuring both require snacks. Well let's be real, everything requires snacks. Sometimes you  need to bring something to keep you going. I love eating hummus and veggies, and these jars make the perfect vessel. Wash and chop whatever veggies you like. Here I used sweet peppers, carrots and celery. Add hummus to the bottom of the jar, and put the veggies on top. It's the perfect dipping vessel!

12. Yogurt & Granola Snack

Sometimes breakfast has to be on the go. These jars are the perfect to go breakfast if you fill them with yogurt and granola. Choose any combination of flavors you like. Here I have some homemade granola, topped with vanilla yogurt and bananas.

13. Dog Treat Storage

You gotta keep your doggie treats fresh too. These jars are perfect if you're traveling with your dog. You know I take Otto everywhere I go, and he need his treats to feel at home (well cookies in his case, he only eats our Dog Cookies).  I even break up our Dog Cookies, because Otto is a little guy and he doesn't need a whole one. These jars are great for traveling dogs.

14. Gift Gummies

Our resident Gummy Guru, Jackie, buys our gummy candy like crazy. She is also the creator of the Instagram account @Gummy.the.bear that you may see us re-gramming. She buys bags of gummies, then she'll fill up a jar with them and gift them for when people watch her dog when she's out of town.

15. Bacon Fat

This is the perfect little jar to store bacon fat in. Or any grease for that matter. I'm going to spare you the photo here, but whenever you're done cooking bacon in the toaster oven just pour the grease from the foil into the jar. It will then harden and you can use it for other things (like adding on top of your dogs food to make him happy, or cooking other things in it, etc.).
